Thongs could be described as minimalist underclothing. The thong consists or a piece of material making up the belt part and the minimum amount of material joining front to back.

There are several different styles of thong with the g-string being most well known. The string part of the name referring to the material around the belt part, it being as slim as possible.

Interestingly, the thong is the only item of clothing banned under the rules of the IDSF (International DanceSport Federation).
